A fallen branch punctured the roof and created an immediate concern. Once we inspected the full system, we found a few other areas that deserved attention. The homeowner chose a more complete solution instead of continuing with one repair at a time.
The inspection started with a clear issue: a tree branch had punctured the shingle surface and disturbed the surrounding roofing materials.
But the broader roof assessment showed that repairing only the puncture would leave several other vulnerable areas untouched. The shingles were already well into their service life, shaded slopes had thick moss growth, and the chimney and roof penetrations showed signs of repeated patching.
That changed the recommendation from a small repair to a complete roof replacement built around the condition of the entire system.
Dense moss covered several shaded roof slopes, especially near the chimney and dormer areas. Moss holds moisture against shingles and can lift the edges over time, making it harder to see what is happening underneath.
The inspection also showed visible weathering and granule loss consistent with an older roof. Rather than treating the moss as a cosmetic issue, we considered it part of the roof’s overall condition and remaining service life.
The chimney flashing had separated in places and had been patched with surface caulk. Debris was also collecting on the uphill side, where water should be directed cleanly around the chimney.
As part of the reroof, the chimney flashing was rebuilt and integrated into the new roofing system. A properly sized roof cricket was also added behind the chimney to split water around the masonry instead of allowing it to collect against the uphill side.
This addressed the root water-management problem instead of relying on another surface patch.
The steep-slope roof sections were rebuilt with GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles, while the designated low-slope section received a modified bitumen system.
Using the right material for each roof area matters because shingles and low-slope membranes manage water differently. Treating the entire roof as one material type would not have been the best fit for the home’s design.
The project also included new ice and water protection, synthetic underlayment, drip edge, flashing details, and ridge ventilation so the finished roof could perform as one coordinated system.

The original call started with one visible puncture. The completed project addressed the roof as a whole. The new system replaced aging shingles, corrected the vulnerable chimney transition, rebuilt the low-slope section with the right membrane, improved drainage behind the chimney, and removed the need to keep relying on older patches. For the homeowner, the value was not simply a cleaner-looking roof. It was knowing the known weak points had been addressed together instead of one repair at a time.
Sometimes. If the surrounding roofing system is still in good condition and the damage is truly isolated, a targeted repair may be appropriate. In this project, the inspection found several additional age- and water-management concerns, so full replacement made more sense than patching one area.
Moss can hold moisture against the roof surface and grow beneath shingle edges. Over time, that can lift shingles, hide deterioration, and contribute to faster wear, especially on shaded roof sections.
A roof cricket is a small sloped structure installed on the uphill side of a chimney. It helps split and redirect water around the chimney instead of allowing water, leaves, and debris to collect directly behind it.
Low-slope areas need a roofing system designed to handle slower drainage and increased water exposure. Modified bitumen creates a continuous membrane that is better suited to those conditions than standard asphalt shingles.
If the flashing is deteriorated, separated, heavily patched, or no longer integrated correctly with the roof, replacement is usually the better long-term approach. Rebuilding the flashing during the reroof allows the new materials to work together as one water-shedding system.
